In A Perfect World!

A perfect DLC would be user friendly with easy tabs for navigation such as the ones on zooniverse.com. http://goo.gl/Zm59z0

Making the website colorful and easy to read would be appealing as well. This example is easy to follow and identify.  http://goo.gl/arrMHY

Along with easy navigation, a perfect DLC would provide opportunity for members to respond to one another and then create private threads for discussion.  It would enable users to get more specific answers to their questions or concerns.  Of course, a free membership would be attractive too!  Having a way to monitor comments for appropriateness would be beneficial as well.

Joining a DLC

Joining a DLC is a great way for educators to collaborate and share ideas at their convenience. I joined openstudy.com.  Open Study was more appealing to me because the posts were well organized and easy to navigate.
This DLC is divided up into subject areas of interest and allows users to read and respond to questions posed by other users related to that topic.  Free sessions for users makes the website more appealing. Students might find this website appealing because they could find common areas of interest or difficulty.  Seeing that other people struggle with the same issues could provide them reassurance.  Also, finding multiple opinions on how to work through these issues would be beneficial.

Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is an important part our lives now.   Entering the realm of "onlineism" is a basic principle of life for some or a scary jump into the unknown for others.  As a young adult, I feel like I have absorbed and made use of available technology, while my parents still are trying to figure out how to like my status on facebook.  On the other hand, my four year old knows how to access facebook and, not only like, but post random comments too!  Like it or not, it is part of our future, so understanding the importance of being a good digital citizen is important at any age or level of skill with technology.

Professionalism is an important part of digital citizenship, especially for educators.  The Microsoft Safety and Security Center shows statistics about different ages and the repercussions of personal posts online.  Some of these facts were astounding to me! Like this one!!!! http://goo.gl/JFpiQH  Remembering that EVERYTHING you do is permanently "out there" for everyone to see is important.  An online reputation can make or break college entrance and I'm sure would affect your job as well!

Respecting others and their ideas is important characteristic for digital citizenship.  When communicating online we lose certain elements of communication.  Reading the body language or tone in another person's voice help us communication when talking to one another.  When communication occurs online, those elements can't be used.  A person's words may seem harsh or abrasive, when in reality, they did not mean it that way.  Careful word choice and the way language is used is important to convey the right message.

Promptness is also an important part of the digital community.  Responding in a timely manner to others and their comments is important to keep communication lines open and ideas flowing.  Regardless of the interface used for communication, the user has to make an effort to be responsible in posting.
